If you really have Money to burn, of course the "branded" Hotels in Rome are great!

As an avid traveler myself, in my experience hotels are good for short visits, but for long vacations renting an apartment is more affordable, especially if you're with your family or a group of friends.

And in a country as large and historical as Italy its probably the best option you have. When we traveled to Rome we used this nice List of Italian Vacation Apartments It really helped us out.
